Everything is Spiritual: A New Series
I am told that writing a series is good for blogging. I am not good at that kind of thing, but a thought has so captured my imagination over the last few days that I feel compelled to give it a shot. The thought that has captured me is that everything is spiritual.
In The Shaping of Things to Come, Alan Hirsch writes:
…in the Western spiritual tradition we have tended to see the “religious” as one category of life among many (we even call nuns and monks the “religious”), the Hebrew mind has no such distinction about a purely “religious” existence but is concerned with all of life….All of life is sacred when it is placed in relationship to the living God.
(emphasis mine)
The Hebrews of the Old Testament saw all of life as a spiritual matter. This is part of the reason that “there is actually a rather profound if somewhat nonlinear “logic” in the Torah, a logic that trains us to relate all aspects of life to God” (The Forgotten Ways by Alan Hirsch).
Can this be true? Is it possible to view everything in life as a spiritual matter that is directly related to God? If this is possible, why have we forgotten such an important aspect of our spirituality?
As I have wrestled with this I have become convinced that it is not only possible to view all things as spiritual, but it is essential to our relationship with Jesus. This thought brings us to a deeper definition of purity, personal holiness and righteousness. It also proves to us that God is working for our good in both the miraculous and the mundane.
In this series I will hit on the spiritual aspects of:
- Driving
- Talking
- Shaving
- Working
- Commuting among strangers
- Eating
- Reading
- Discipline
- Keeping a Calendar
- Getting Dressed
- and more…

Yeah, I should have made that more clear. This is a blog series. So each day (or so) I will be posting about the spiritual aspects one or two mundane actions.
