Please don’t just “go to” my church

August 26, 2007 :: Posted by - Adam :: Category - Church Planting

I am terrified that people might just “go to” the church that I plant. Like fans crowding into an arena to see the show rather than coming to experience God Himself! It absolutely makes me sick to think that I might plant a church where people come in, sit a while, enjoy the experience, and then leave unchanged every single week!

Ed Stetzer writes in Planting Missional Churches:

Soon people began to “go to” church instead of being the church. Church began to be recognized as a place instead of a way of life.

To all of you (and myself) that look in the mirror this morning and start getting ready to “go to” church; I suggest first looking in your Bible and work on getting ready to be the church.

I want to create a church where people do life together and intentionally live as the church. It’s not an event, it’s a state of being.

    Wow, Stetzer says what I’ve been telling my core group for 4 months! We don’t “go to church” we are the church! This is so clear in the book of Acts. Sure, the church is involved in lots of ministry activity, but this flows from who they are, not the other way around. Continuing to pray for you, brother.

    That’s the problem with most christians today, and it doesn’t help if that’s the way the churches are too!

    good call man. Just don’t let yourself get bogged down in trying to “make that happen.” Let God handle it. He’s much more capable than you.
